Which Schlage Models This Applies To

Schlage residential deadbolts fall into three series you’ll encounter in Manhattan apartments and brownstones. The B60N is the Grade 2 single-cylinder workhorse, ANSI/BHMA certified for residential use. The B62N adds a keyed cylinder on both sides, required by code for doors with glass within forty inches of the lock. The B660P is the commercial-grade equivalent, a Grade 1 deadbolt with a larger faceplate and through-bolt mounting that we install on heavy solid-core doors in co-op buildings from the Upper East Side to Harlem.

Identification is straightforward if you know where to look. The model number is stamped on the edge of the door, on the latch faceplate, or on the original key bow. If that’s worn away, measure the backset, the distance from the door edge to the center of the cylinder. Schlage ships standard at 2-3/8 inches, but Manhattan pre-war doors often need 2-3/4 inches. We carry both backsets on every truck. The Schlage B60N uses a 1-inch diameter faceplate; competitors sometimes substitute a 15/16-inch aftermarket part that leaves a visible gap in a repainted door. We don’t.

Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• The thumb turn rotates but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. The tailpiece connecting the thumb turn to the bolt mechanism has sheared or the internal cam has worn flat. This is the most common failure we see in Schlage B60N units after eight to twelve years of use. The door appears locked, but the bolt sits short of the strike.
• The key requires jiggling or works only at an angle. The cylinder pin chambers have worn out of tolerance, or the key itself has been copied too many times on inaccurate machines. In Manhattan, we’ve found that keys copied at hardware store kiosks in Midtown have enough variance that they accelerate cylinder wear by forcing pins against chamber walls.
• The bolt sticks or grinds in the strike plate. The door has settled on its hinges, or the building’s seasonal humidity swing, common in older Manhattan masonry structures, has shifted the frame. The deadbolt isn’t the problem, but forcing it will make it one. We check frame alignment before we quote replacement.
• The exterior cylinder rotates loosely in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door substrate, or the cylinder retaining pin has failed. On hollow metal doors in newer Manhattan condos, this often means the door itself needs reinforcement, not just a new lock.
• The finish has corroded or pitted. Schlage’s satin nickel and aged bronze hold up well, but the matte black finish on some B60N units shows wear within four to five years on south-facing doors in Manhattan, where UV exposure and coastal salt air combine. The lock functions, but the aesthetic degradation often prompts replacement before mechanical failure.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing inherently dangerous about installing a deadbolt. The risk is in what you don’t see. A Schlage B60N installs with two through-bolts and a latch, but if the door edge is splintered from a previous installation, the new latch will seat poorly and bind. If the strike plate isn’t aligned to the bolt path, you’ll grind the bolt against the strike every time you lock it, accelerating wear. We’ve replaced deadbolts in Chelsea where the previous owner had installed three successive locks, each slightly off-center, leaving a Swiss-cheese door edge that required a wrap plate to restore integrity.
