Medeco Lock Rekeying: The Manhattan Owner’s Guide

Medeco lock rekeying in Manhattan typically runs $45-$85 per cylinder for residential deadbolts and knob sets, with high-security commercial cylinders ranging $75-$140, all quoted in writing before we dispatch. We stock Medeco pinning kits, key blanks, and replacement cylinders for same-day service across Manhattan, from pre-war walk-ups in the West Village to new construction near Hudson Yards. Most owners discover their Medeco needs rekeying after a move, a lost key, or a tenant turnover, when they realize the hardware is too valuable to replace but too risky to leave pinned to the old key.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco has produced three distinct cylinder architectures since the 1980s, and identifying which one is in your door determines whether we rekey in the field or replace the cylinder entirely.

The Medeco Original (discontinued, but still common in pre-2000 Manhattan co-ops) uses a pin-tumbler sidebar mechanism with angled cuts. These can be rekeyed if the cylinder body is undamaged, though key blanks are getting harder to source. The Medeco Biaxial (1990s-2010s) added a second locking point; most residential installations in Manhattan fall into this line. The Medeco M3** and **Medeco X4 are current production, with the M3 retaining the classic sidebar and the X4 using a conventional pin stack that accepts Medeco’s restricted keyways.

We carry pinning kits for all four generations. The critical compatibility gotcha: Biaxial key blanks will not enter an Original cylinder, and attempting to force one damages the sidebar slot. We verify by reading the stamping on the cylinder face (usually visible when the door is open and the thumbturn is rotated) or by disassembling the lock to read the plug marking. For Medeco specifically, we use OEM pins and springs; aftermarket pinning components for high-security cylinders vary in tolerance and can create drag that wears the sidebar prematurely. Novak Lock & Security Manhattan is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Medeco.

Signs Your Medeco Lock Rekeying Is Failing

Signs Your Medeco Lock Rekeying Is Failing
  • The key sticks or requires jiggling at specific angles. This usually indicates worn pin chambers or accumulated grit from Manhattan street dust working into the cylinder. Medeco’s tight tolerances mean small debris causes outsized friction; a full disassembly, clean, and repin typically resolves it.
  • The key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. The tailpiece or cam connecting the cylinder to the locking mechanism has slipped or cracked. On Medeco deadbolts, this is often a brass cam worn thin from years of forceful turning; we replace the cam during rekeying if we find scoring.
  • You have keys with different bitting that both operate the lock. This is master key wear or a chamber that was pinned to two different depths simultaneously, a fault we’ve found in Manhattan buildings where multiple locksmiths have serviced the same hardware over decades. It requires stripping all pins and repinning to a single, clean combination.
  • The sidebar clicks audibly when the key is withdrawn. Normal on some wear, but a sharp click with key resistance means the sidebar springs are fatigued. We replace sidebar springs as standard during any Medeco rekey; they’re a $3 part that prevents a $200 cylinder replacement.
  • The lock was rekeyed recently and already feels loose. A previous technician used standard-depth pins in a Biaxial cylinder, or failed to set the sidebar properly. We see this in about one in ten Medeco service calls in Manhattan, usually from hardware store key-copy operations that don’t stock Medeco-specific pinning kits.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Range What’s Included
Residential Medeco rekey (deadbolt or knob) $45-$85 Disassembly, clean, new pins/springs, 2 keys, photo record
High-security commercial cylinder rekey $75-$140 Full pinning kit, sidebar service, 2 restricted keys, written scope
Master key system rekey (per cylinder) $65-$120 Master pinning, key schedule documentation, 1 master + change key
Cylinder replacement (if rekey not possible) $180-$340 New Medeco-compatible cylinder, keyed to new combination, installed

What drives the range: cylinder generation (Original parts cost more to source), master key complexity, and whether the lock requires removal from a damaged door frame. Every quote is governed by Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. We do not add a call-out surcharge on arrival, and we do not quote a teaser rate that balloons at the door. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers all rekeying work; if a pin slips or a key doesn’t operate smoothly, we return and correct it.

A Medeco cylinder can be removed from a door with standard tools, and an owner can inspect the plug face for model markings. Beyond that, the work gets specific fast.

Rekeying a Medeco requires a pinning kit with sidebar components, a key gauge for angled cuts, and a follower tool sized to the cylinder diameter. The sidebar springs are under light tension; they do not carry the dangerous energy of a garage door torsion spring, but they launch easily across a room and are easy to lose on a Manhattan apartment floor. More critically, improper pinning compromises the lock’s pick resistance, the reason you paid the Medeco premium in the first place.

We recommend calling for any Medeco rekey. The hardware is too precise for improvised tools, and a mis-pinned cylinder is a security downgrade you might not discover until it’s too late. Call (862) 319-3759; we’ll quote the exact price after you read us the cylinder marking, and we’ll be there same day if you’re in Manhattan.
