Abloy Deadbolt Installation: The Manhattan Owner’s Guide

Abloy deadbolt installation in Manhattan typically runs $340-$580 for a complete replacement, including the cylinder, bolt assembly, and strike hardware, with same-day service available most days. We stock Abloy-compatible deadbolts and cylinders on our service vans for the Protec2, Sento, and Exec series, and we quote the full installed price in writing before dispatching a technician. Most Manhattan owners discover a failing Abloy deadbolt when the key starts catching at 45 degrees, the thumb turn grinds against the escutcheon, or the bolt no longer fully extends into a strike plate that has shifted in a prewar door frame.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy deadbolts fall into three series you’ll find in Manhattan residential and commercial buildings, and the right replacement depends on the keyway and the door prep.

  • Protec2: The current high-security line with the rotating disk mechanism and the blue key head. If your key says “Protec2” and the cylinder face is 25mm or 31.5mm, we match that exactly. The Protec2 deadbolt uses a proprietary 1-inch bolt throw, longer than standard Schlage or Kwikset hardware, so retrofitting into an existing ANSI strike often requires a new strike plate or minor frame work.
  • Sento: The mid-tier disc-detainer series, common in co-op conversions from the early 2000s. Sento cylinders have a silver key head and a 21.5mm or 25mm face diameter. The deadbolt housing is narrower than Protec2, and the bolt is a standard 1-inch throw, which means we can sometimes reuse the existing strike if the alignment is still true.
  • Exec (discontinued): The older disc-detainer line with the black key head. Exec deadbolts are no longer manufactured, but we install Protec2 retrofits that fit the same door prep and maintain the same keying if you have a master key system. This is where the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision matters: an OEM Protec2 cylinder carries the full Abloy warranty and key control, while quality aftermarket cylinders exist for Exec replacements where key control is less critical.

We identify the series by the key head color, the cylinder face marking, and the bolt throw measurement. If the deadbolt was installed before 2010 in a Manhattan prewar building, we also check whether the door was retrofitted with a modern 2-1/8 inch bore or still uses the older 1-1/2 inch setup, which affects housing compatibility.

Signs Your Abloy Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Abloy Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
  • Key catches or stops mid-turn. In a disc-detainer lock like Abloy, this usually means a disc has worn a flat spot or debris has entered the keyway. Manhattan’s winter salt tracked into vestibules accelerates this. The cylinder can often be serviced, but if the wear is in multiple discs, replacement is the reliable fix.
  • Thumb turn grinds or requires two hands. The bolt mechanism or the tailpiece connecting cylinder to bolt has developed play. In buildings near the Hudson or East River, we’ve found humidity swelling the door wood enough to bind the bolt against the jamb.
  • Bolt extends but doesn’t fully seat in the strike. The strike plate has shifted, or the door has settled in the frame. This is structural, not a cylinder problem, but owners often replace the deadbolt first. We check frame alignment before quoting any hardware.
  • Key works from one side only. The tailpiece has cracked or the cylinder set screw has loosened. On Abloy deadbolts, the tailpiece is hardened steel and rarely fails, but improper installation with a standard set screw instead of the Abloy-specified pin can allow gradual rotation that shears the connection.
  • Visible corrosion on the cylinder face or bolt. Brass and stainless steel resist corrosion, but the zinc alloy housing underneath does not. Once bubbling appears, the internal mechanism is usually compromised. We’ve replaced more of these in ground-floor Greenwich Village units where sidewalk salt spray reaches the door than in upper-floor apartments.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Price Range
Abloy Protec2 deadbolt, complete (cylinder + housing + bolt) $280-$420
Abloy Sento deadbolt, complete $220-$340
Installation labor, standard door prep $120-$160
Strike adjustment or replacement $40-$80
Frame modification (prewar retrofit) $80-$140
Typical total installed $340-$580

The range depends on three factors: the Abloy series, whether the door prep matches the new hardware without modification, and whether you need the cylinder keyed to an existing master system. We stock Protec2 and Sento deadbolts on our Manhattan vans, so most jobs use hardware we carry. Haven Standard Clause 1 applies: the price our dispatcher quotes is the price on the invoice. No call-out surcharge, no “parts extra” surprise. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation, and the Abloy factory warranty covers the hardware itself.

What you can safely check: remove the two mounting screws and confirm the cylinder set screw is tight. If the thumb turn spins freely with the cylinder removed, the tailpiece is intact and the problem is likely in the cylinder or bolt housing. What goes wrong with DIY: Abloy deadbolts use a specific tailpiece length and orientation that must match the backset and the cylinder face diameter. A Protec2 cylinder in a Sento housing will bind; a 31.5mm face in a door prepped for 25mm will leave a gap that catches clothing and compromises security. The disc-detainer mechanism also requires precise lubrication with Abloy-specified graphite, not WD-40, which gums the discs. If the bolt is binding in the frame, forcing it with a screwdriver can distort the strike mortise. We’re not going to tell you a deadbolt is dangerous to install, but we will tell you that a misaligned bolt in a fire-rated Manhattan apartment door is a code issue, and that we’ve been called to fix more DIY installations than we’d prefer.
