Signs Your Sargent Smart Lock Installation Is Failing

DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where DIY becomes expensive.
You can safely check: battery orientation and voltage with a multimeter; whether the door closes cleanly without pressing the bolt (frame alignment issues masquerade as lock failure); and whether your building’s Wi-Fi network password changed recently. These three checks resolve about 20% of the “dead” smart locks we get called to in Manhattan.
Where DIY goes wrong: the motor housing contains a high-torque stepper motor with no mechanical stop. If you disassemble it without releasing spring tension on the cam, the gear train can snap. The mortise chassis on IN-series units has a deadlocking plunger under spring load that will launch across the room if the faceplate screws are removed in the wrong sequence.
