Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent deadbolts fall into three series that cover nearly every Manhattan installation we encounter. The 7800 series is the grade 1 commercial deadbolt with a hardened steel bolt and anti-saw pins, marked “7800” on the escutcheon - common on co-op entrance doors and small commercial spaces below 14th Street. The 4870 series adds a double-cylinder option (keyed both sides), required by NYC building code for doors with glass panels within 40 inches of the lock.

We match by backset - 2-3/8″ for most residential doors, 2-3/4″ for commercial - and by door thickness, which in Manhattan runs 1-3/8″ for older prewar units but 1-3/4″ for anything built after 1960. Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Is Failing

• Key sticks at 45 or 90 degrees. The pin chambers in the Sargent cylinder are wearing unevenly, or the sidebar is dragging on a bent bottom pin. In humid months near the river, we’ve seen green oxidation on brass pins accelerate this by half.
• Thumb turn rotates but bolt doesn’t move. The tailpiece connecting thumb turn to bolt mechanism has sheared or slipped its set screw. On 4870 series units, the zinc alloy tailpiece corrodes where it meets the steel bolt housing.
• Bolt extends only partially or binds in the strike. Door frame shift is common in Manhattan brownstones and walk-ups; the strike mortise is no longer aligned with the bolt path. We measure the gap before quoting - sometimes it’s the frame, not the lock.
• Loose escutcheon or visible gap between plate and door. The through-bolts have stripped their wood anchors or the door face has compressed from overtightening. We bring hardwood dowels and longer machine screws for this.
• Key works from one side only. On double-cylinder 4870 models, the interior cylinder tailpiece has broken or the connecting bar has slipped. This leaves the exterior cylinder functional but the interior inoperable - a fire code violation in multi-unit buildings.

An owner can safely check three things: whether the key is bent (hold it flat against a table edge), whether the strike screws are loose, and whether the bolt path is obstructed by paint buildup. Beyond that, Sargent deadbolts present two genuine hazards. The 7800 series bolt is spring-loaded under tension; if disassembled without the tailpiece properly aligned, the bolt can launch from the housing with enough force to damage the door or injure a hand. More critically, double-cylinder installations in NYC must comply with fire egress code - an improperly specified interior cylinder can trap occupants and expose the owner to liability.
